Barcelona president Sandro Rosell says he will do everything in his power to persuade Pep Guardiola to extend his stay.Guardiola, despite having achieved outstanding success since taking charge of the first-team in 2008, has always declined the opportunity to sign a long-term deal and instead renewed his contract year on year.
He has said that he does not intend to remain at Barca for an extended period, and there has been much talk that he could take charge of a club in Italy or Qatar, where he concluded his playing days.In an interview with Sport on Friday, Guardiola said: "Listen, every day I think that tomorrow I am leaving. When you manage something, you have to always think that tomorrow you could go."I work better if I think I have the freedom to decide my future. Being tied to a contract for a long time makes me anxious and that can make you lose your passion."
Adding that he had "no idea" about his future, he added: "If they still want me and I feel like it, I will stay. If they don't want me, they fire me. I will do whatever comes up. In my profession you have to make decisions depending on what is happening. There will be a day when I no longer feel like being with my players, just as they will not feel like being with me, and at that moment I will have to go find others to make those plans for the future."
Rosell, though, remains determined to keep Guardiola at the Camp Nou. "Guardiola is the man we want, and we greatly appreciate him," he told Onda Cero. "He is by far the best coach the club has ever seen and is also a culé. We'll do all we can so he can't say no to staying longer."Rosell also said he hoped Carles Puyol, who has revealed he considered retiring last season due to injury, can enjoy the longevity of Paolo Maldini at AC Milan."When I read what Puyol said, I realised how much he was suffering," he said. "He is still our captain and we hope Puyol can be our Maldini. He can stay as long as he wants. He gives us a lot of leadership."
